Burning Mouth Syndrome

What are the symptoms of BMS? 


Symptoms of BMS range from normal to extreme burning sensation in your mouth including your lips, oral cavity, tongue, palate, throat, cheeks etc. 


Bad taste or loss of taste in your mouth – whatever you eat either has a metallic taste or bitter taste. 


You constantly feel a tingling sensation in your mouth or feel nothing there. 


You are likely to feel thirsty because of dryness in mouth, and feel the need to consume liquids, 


This sensation in your mouth stays on for the whole day or come and go like recurring sessions. 


No physical changes is as such reported in cases of BMS. 


So, what are the causes of Burning mouth syndrome? 


Causes of BMS includes any underlying abnormalities in the body such as, 

any inflammatory condition like oral thrush or lichen planus which can lead to BMS. 


Dry mouth or xerostomia is another situation in which there is a problem with the salivary glands. You constantly feel a burning sensation because of that which literally leads to BMS.


Lack of nutrients in the body like Iron zinc, Vitamins can lead to severe problems of the body and your mouth. 


GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease in which stomach acids enter your mouth by reflex action or gag. 


Any medications especially high blood pressure medicines lead to BMS. 


Any psychological disorder like stress or anxiety also lead to BMS issues. 


Bruxism is another case in which BMS is seen, moreover any other oral habits like lip biting, mouth breathing etc also causes BMS. 


How can we prevent BMS?


BMS needs more of a preventive approach rather than curing because the underlying causes are very vague in nature. Hence, avoiding highly spicy food, having overly medicated for any disease can help a lot.
