PREGNANCY & ORAL HEALTH

Pregnancy is the time period in a woman’s life when many changes can be seen in the body and individual changes on the different parts of the body also occur. Such changes are also seen in the oral cavity. Many women may not be aware of the link that exists between their oral health and their systemic or general health, as well as the impact that other factors can have on a developing child in the womb of a pregnant female.

During pregnancy, the self-care in cases of females decreases thus neglecting dental health in such cases is very common. the problems presented by sensitivity and inflammation related to the gum tissues which is very common in pregnant females, the so-called pregnancy gingivitis is diagnosed in approximately every pregnant female. that certain aspects of dental treatment may be dangerous to the developing child in the womb in such cases.

Many studies have been done and have suggested that oral bacteria like streptococcus strains and their bi-products have the ability and actually can cross the placenta and the placental barrier which is the special organ that allows the transfer of nutrients and other important factors that develops and promote the growth of the developing baby in the fetus. Passage of these bacterial products in the womb can affect the fetus or the developing baby by causing an inflammatory response in the mother, which may ultimately result in preterm/premature delivery or eventually death of the fetus in severe complications.

Thus it is advised to all pregnant females that taking care of their oral hygiene during pregnancy can help a lot in avoiding such severe complications. All dental professionals have this duty to educate the need of maintaining good oral hygiene in pregnant females. Pregnancy gingivitis is the most common reason to visit a dental clinic among pregnant females.
